Nick

Folks, a bit of style for the fat man pah-lease!

I was talking to someone this evening about men’s fashion and questions came up about what would I want if I could have anything. I wasn’t really sure to be honest but I came up with a few things that I could think of off the top of my head.

Give Natalie an idea and she’ll run with it. In a few minutes flat, she sent me a number of links to sites on men’s fashion. Let me be honest here – I am no fashionista. I’m a humble man simply trying to get through life being as fancy as he can be.

One of the links she sent me was to a Modus Couture blog post with a couple of pics of a hot, bearded man dressed up and ready to go!

That man is stylin’. It’s a shame that I haven’t been able to find pictures of the whole collection to link to. Shame Corpus, shame. I’m kinda going off track here.

I thought to myself that perhaps I could look for similar clothing in larger sizes available in Australia. How hard would it be? Actually, pretty bloody hard.

This is the selection of trousers for one major online ‘big guy’ clothing store.

Sorry what? That isn’t a selection. Jeans, a flexi waist trouser, denim trouser and a jean pant? Do you want me to look like I’ve stepped out of my Dad’s wardrobe again? It’s like you expect me to walk around in a pair of Stubbies and a Hawaiian shirt during the day, and then upgrade to ‘Jean Pant’ at night for some sophistication. Pah-lease.

Natalie found this other awesome look as well, from the Blackbird Blog. Smart musician dude carrying smart musician style bag with skinny tie, geeking it to the max glasses, and the jeans.

At least I know where to get the jeans from.

This is all I want:

  • Clothes that fit me and fit me well
  • Good quality fabrics that last and wear well
  • Styles that make sense to me today, not me in twenty years time or twenty years ago
  • I want to be able to look fancy without having to spend a FORTUNE

Give this man some good clothes so I can look as good as I feel about myself!

Seriously, as much ink has been spilled about the dearth of clothing for fat women, it is SOOO much worse for fat men. Thank goodness my husband is able to wear jeans and t-shirts to work, because if he had to wear suits I don't even know where we could find them; his tuxedo for our wedding was special-ordered form a tailor. There are exactly two big-and-tall stores that carry his size, and both are at least 50% hideous clothes–Hawaiian shirts, cargo jeans with 800 pockets, etc. Department stores are starting to carry some big and tall, but most of it only goes up to 2X. I kind of hoped when Jay McCarroll won Project Runway he might start a line of big and tall clothes, but no such luck.

Hi Nick great story on today tonight I just wanted to let you know that there is a small but great range of plus men clothing available in R M Williams its called “big mens” funnily enough its great quality and mid to high priced but worth every penny. they expand the range every season and have core and seasonal items. I have been selling it in my store for two years. It comes in XB to 5XB which basically extends on from the regular mens which finishes at 3xl. XB is a little bigger than a 4XL and the jeans start at 42 inch up to 56inch waist. they have casual polos and shorts as well as rugbys and shirts long and short sleeve check the website or register online for a catalogue or i can send you one. I may not be in business for much longer as we dont sell much but im trying to hang in there. we have been looking for plus sizes to stock as i am about a 24 (and gorgeous) but its really hard to source good quality plus size stock in australia thats not granny. we should all get together and create a range.

Hi, We have been buying locally from stores like Mr Big and Big and Tall, Sure you pay a bit extra sometimes but I have three links here. The New Zealand size goes to 8cl and with the exchange rate it helps to drop the price. The USA with many large men size online stores, Big Dog is very popular over there but they don't ship. Our friends Natalie ships stuff over if we buy from them. But I do agree why should we have to go to SPECIAL stores and pay more in general all clothing sizes should be available.
