Success – the man is fancy

I’ve been meaning to post this for a few days now. I saw a picture of myself from a Sunday afternoon trip to the park with some friends and thought “HEY! I CAN LOOK FANCY TOO!!!”

[img_assist|nid=86|title=Fancy Nick|desc=Not my glasses, but fancy none the less.|link=none|align=left|width=200|height=133]

It’s actually the first time in, well, ever that I’ve thought that about myself. I know that with my wedding photos (which you’ll see if you read back a couple of days to one of Natalie’s posts) I thought I looked pretty good. There was still this “but I’m fat!” in a sad way when I was seeing them for the first time.

Now, I feel like I can fat it up and look awesome in any situation. My wardrobe isn’t that extensive at the moment, but I can work on that. Mmmm, spending up big at Kingsize Big and Tall. What I would like is more variety and for fat man clothes to not cost an arm and a leg. Just an arm or a leg would be sufficient.

However I think I know who one of my icons of fancy is. Penn Jillette. I’m way shorter than Penn is though so the look wouldn’t work for me, but he comes out time and time again looking awesome even with a casual look.[img_assist|nid=87|title=Penn Jillette - fancy!|desc=|link=none|align=right|width=200|height=261]

I think part of it is just the metric butt load of confidence that this man exudes. In fact it is almost pouring out of his skin, his face, his clothes and the awesome goatee. He has a bit more hair though. Which moves me right into my next train of thought. Love a good segue.

I’m balding and I’m proud to be balding. I don’t want some advanced hair regrowth formula because I wouldn’t look like me any more. I haven’t had a full head of hair in years. So I’m starting to wonder whether what to do with it. Do I shave it all off again, and keep a beard? Can you be a bald shaven beard wearer and look fancy?

Don’t get me wrong. I think bald men are fancy. I do sometimes wish I had more hair, but only so I could grow into a silver fox when I get older. Could a silver beard with a bald head work? Perhaps I could just leave a small amount of hair to try and make sense of the beard. Or perhaps just a simple Penn Jillette style goatee.

Nah, I’ll stay with what I’ve got for now thanks. I’m pretty darn fancy as it is.

Nick, Penn looks great because his suits fit him. If you want to look as good as Penn, get your suit at a place where they alter the suits to fit you. That is the real key. He has great taste in suits (or at least good advice on what kind of suits to buy) but even really inexpensive suits can make you look quite fancy if they fit you — short people, even short fat people, can look awesome in suits. Whether you can pull off the suit look is really about can you sustain a more formal style of dressing. People these days are used to a casual style of dressing, and if that is what you really feel best in, like jeans and tees, or pullovers and khakis, it can be difficult to wear suits day after day. The real things to consider are: do you mind wearing many layers of clothing, and how do you feel about ties? Anyways, I am always happy to see a guy dressed up — so thanks for being fancy!

I love that you said fancy. And you are indeed fancy.

I love that you're talking about being fancy! There are pretty much no fat men on the internets talking about fashion and fanciness. Also, I have a major crush on Penn.

Nick you are a fancy man, no matter what your outfit is. Your sense of humour and kindness both shine out of you.

Penn Jillette is a giant – he's so tall! But as Halle has said, if clothes are cut right, any shape can be fancy.

As for the hair – bald is SEXY. Whooooweee, gimme some Jamie Hyneman!

Pretty darn fancy indeed! Bald is fancy, hats are fancy, and beards are fancy! I think both you and Natalie looked wonderful at your wedding; it looked like a perfect day. You can absolutely be a bald shaven beard wearer and look fancy… it's all in the confidence and in the knowledge that you look good and feel comfortable with it, as you said. It's not so much 'not giving a crap what anyone thinks' in a negative/society-hating way, but more of a 'I don't care if anyone is negative toward me, because I'm fancy and I know it!'
    And Penn Jillette is rockin'.
And I don't think I've ever typed 'fancy' so many times in a three-minute period :)

I love that you mentioned Penn Jillette! Even though I disagree with a lot of what he says–heck, even as a Libertarian, I manage to disagree with most of what he says!–I completely love Penn & Teller for being so gutsy. No matter what they do, they do it with full force, and I find that quality admirable. Plus, they're not afraid to admit it when they're completely freaking wrong (i.e. secondhand smoking).

Anywho, that's pretty much all that I have to say. Haha.

Eh, I don't know, I think your beard makes you look fancier than Penn Jillette. All he's got going for him is a shiny suit. Anyone can wear a shiny suit. Not everyone can rock a beard.

What do you think of Matt Preston the food critic who was on Masterchef? My husband loves his (Matt's) style.

Some really good points. You are right about the layers of clothing – in a Brisbane summer I'm likely to cook with that amount of clothes on.

I can't say I'm a style icon quite yet, but give me some time and I'll work on it.

Also I can understand the crush thing too – he is a handsome man.

Fancy is quite addictive and it can become very easy to type. Fancy that.

You're right though – it's all about attitude and confidence!

Yup, Jamie is hot. I'll pay you that. :)

Beards are something that some men just cannot pull off at all. I think I'm lucky that I can, although it's also my way of having some hair to 'style' of sorts.

Last night after I posted this, Natalie mentioned Matt to me and reminded me of how much of a style master he is. I thought about editing the post to add some more about him, but he is probably worth a post of his own.

I could rock a cravat. I don't really have a neck anyway, so why not?

Ah yes. They do have some outspoken views. I really enjoy Bullshit (the show, not the stuff that comes from a bull's but). But hey, each to their own.

Thank you. Fancy. I'll say it again. Fancy!

Blad men are fancy and so are blad men with beards :)

  • Jes

I say full speed ahead with the bald-and-rocking-the-beard look. Especially if you wear that grey newsie hat with it. Bald men + beard + fancy hat = full-on sexiness. :)

Hi Nick: you are so cute! Your wife is a lucky woman! I wish my own hubby cared about being “fancy” as much as you do … but he's getting there. A lifetime of chubbiness and clothes built for skinny Abercrombie models has chipped at his self-esteem, and that takes a few years to repair. Thought I'd throw my thoughts in about the bald-with-beard issue: I say split the difference, and rock the bald head with a goatee!!! :)
