Fuck you PETA

I just wanted to write about how I feel about the fatphobic PETA billboard, but I’d like to preface it by stating that this is a group blog and we all have different experiences and reactions to things and we’re all free to blog about the same subject with different points of view. However, on this topic… I will say few words about the actual content of the billboard.

I’m not surprised at this latest campaign at all, I was actually disappointed they were so subtle. PETA have a long history of provocative and misleading advertising, and their history of “activism” is infused with the notion that human rights aren’t as important as animal rights. I’ve also noticed that every PETA campaign gets a little bit more provocative – because they’ve realised they get more mileage out of a billboard lease if they piss people off and make them talk about it.

So that’s why I don’t talk about PETA controversies. They are completely unconcerned with social justice and human rights, and will likely never change their asshole brand because it gets them too much press.

That's why the only mention I've given it is a “Fuck you, PETA” on my facebook. They aren't worth the effort on my blog.

I hadn't seen this before now, but it's certainly worthy of a “fuck you PETA”
For crying out loud… can they really see it turning anyone vegetarian? Ugh, just ugh.

PETA are a joke. Natalie said it so well, they are not concerned with social justice and human rights.

“People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals plans today to announce an unusual marketing pitch to the U.S. government: Rent us space on the fence for billboards warning illegal border crossers there is more to fear than the Border Patrol.

The billboards [pictured], in English and Spanish, would offer the caution: “If the Border Patrol Doesn’t Get You, the Chicken and Burgers Will — Go Vegan.”

“We think that Mexicans and other immigrants should be warned if they cross into the U.S. they are putting their health at risk by leaving behind a healthier, staple diet of corn tortillas, beans, rice, fruits and vegetables,” said Lindsay Rajt, assistant manager of PETA’s vegan campaigns.”

I am no longer shocked by their campaigns. How can one company that claims to do so much good, have such damaging and offensive campaigns?

Yes, I say the same thing, “Fuck you PETA!!!” I am also an animal rights supporter but I am no longer going to support this organization since women and this includes plus-sized women are animals also and we deserve the same respect that any other living creature on this earth deserves!!!

I've heard some theories that PETA is really a performance art group trying to be as shocking as possible. Hey, it gets them attention.

Gosh yes, this campaign annoys me. There's nothing like catering to people's “Careful or you're gonna get fat!” fears, along with a bit of hating on of a group of people, to promote a cause. It's ridiculous. And in case PETA has been living under a rock, fat vegetarians and vegans DO exist, and we certainly didn't go veg*n to get thinner. What, are we Doing It Wrong? Not veg*n enough for ya, PETA?

yer awesom natalie! i originally found your site from offbeat bride…and i'm so glad to hear i'm not the only one who feels this way about peta…i respect the cause, i have a sister who is veggie and a sister who is vegan for animal right's reasons, myself having been one and both in my lifetime…i totally respect the vegan lifestyle, and i also have issues with peta. too many to mention…i know a handful of vegans that are not “skinny bitches,' so to speak…it's ridiculous. i was disappointed to see that there are books in publication with the terms “skinny bitch” and “skinny bastard” that talk about veganism. when does someone's size play into animal rights? yeah, should be never.

That wouldn't surprise me in the least.

It's all about the press and unfortunately they do get good press because of it. Someone in the organization probably saw an opportunity with the fatosphere being in the press and decided to jump on it.

Sometimes I think PETA exists not because they love animals, but because they hate people. I used to love them until they sent that gratuituous “elephant in the room” letter to Michael Moore. Even if that bloke is quite over-the-top with his extremist republican-hate, sending him a letter where they call him elephant is pretty much bullying. Just like what they did with that billboard and the one that came after. Bunch of (not so) passive-agressive fuckers.
